Virtual Walks

Idea
While paying attention to a painting by the father of my oldest friend —Juan Macías the father, Pablo Gómez the son— , titled “Paisaje del regocijo” (“Landscape of Rejoice”), I realized that, due to the artist’s play with different planes, simply by rotating the painting 90 degrees and making it horizontal, the landscape could be walked through. It could serve as a tool for introducing virtual world generation to the artist by first making their existing work walkable.
Design Principles
- A simple or foundational idea in one tool can become a complex idea in another tool
- Separating solid generation, texture and materials definition, and interaction allows for using simpler, more semantic concepts
- Rosetta Stone approach: one set of documentation for the artist, another for the ontologist
- Use simple techniques that allow for generating an emotional landscape
Current State
A proof of concept was created with the simplest setup: a photograph of the drawing was used as the ground plane for the world.
Next Steps
- Structural and descriptive analysis of the planimetry and contours.
(It doesn’t have to be very complex or deep; with the experience and material I already have, I can refine it. I had planned to do all of this programmatically, but now I see that the cuts will need to be made in a drawing program.) - Study of materials, color, and projections.
- Development of spaces and interactions.
